Helen Marie Nelligan was born to Royce and Mabel Wederquist on February 9, 1920 in Randolph Iowa, and died on August 28, 2016 in Sleepy Hollow after a long life and a short illness. Helen Marie, much loved by all, grew up on the family farm, the youngest of seven children. She studied at the University of Nebraska and became a Registered Nurse. During World War II, she received a commission in the United States Army serving in the 217th General Hospital Unit in Missouri, England, and Paris. After the war she returned to the States and received her Bachelors in Nursing Science at the University of Nebraska. She moved to New York in 1950 and worked at Westchester County Medical Center as nursing Supervisor for the Emergency Room, Outpatient Clinics, and Pediatrics until her retirement in 1985. She married Gilbert J. Nelligan in 1954 and resided in Thornwood for 61 years. Her husband predeceased her in 1970. She is survived by her children: Royce, his spouse Deborah, Claire, Bruce, his spouse Tracy, and Ward; two grandchildren: Joseph and Kathleen; as well as family, friends, neighbors, and her beloved cat Lola. Services celebrating her life will be held at the Hawthorne Funeral Home on Stevens Avenue in Hawthorne, on Thursday September 1st from 3 to 5 pm.
