Helen Marie Losapio (née Pisco), 96, passed away peacefully at home on the morning of Sunday, July 14, 2024. Born on December 25, 1927, in Yonkers, NY, to Helen and Anthony Pisco, Helen brought light and love into the world on Christmas Day, a fitting start for someone who would become a cherished angel on earth.
Helen was the devoted wife and widow of George Losapio. They married during a blizzard on January 25, 1948 at St. Bartholomew’s Church in Yonkers and together they built a family and a life filled with love. She was a loving mother to her three sons: George, Gary, and Gregory. Helen extended her warmth and kindness to her daughters-in-law, Marie and Joanne, embracing them as her own, as well as to Mindy Losapio and Gail and Peter Stewart. Her greatest joy in life came from being a grandmother. Helen was the beloved “Nanny” to Jennifer (and Mike), Lauren (and Mike), Gregory (and Kate), Luke (and Olga), Matthew (and Nicole), and Michelle (and Jerry). She was a great-grandmother to Valerie, Justin, Draco, and Zelda, and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of Jennifer and Mike’s first born this summer. She is survived by her sister Gloria and predeceased by her sister Margaret.
Helen and George spent much of their free time traveling the country and continent in their motorhomes, making decades of memories with family and friends. Helen was a woman of sharp wit and intellect. She was a true master of crosswords and rapidly solved the puzzles on her favorite program, Wheel of Fortune. She referred to herself as “dainty” and took pride in her stylish appearance and frugal tendencies, often making or mending her clothes by hand on her Singer sewing machine. In her professional life, Helen worked for many years as a secretary at Ciba Geigy Corporation, where she was known for her dedication, meticulous work, and sweet nature.
Helen’s family was her everything, and she dedicated her life to loving and caring for them with an unwavering heart. Her nurturing spirit and boundless love will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and devotion to loved ones will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind. Her family would like to thank Tamuna Jajaia, and Laurie Crossley for caring for her until the end.
A funeral will be held at Ferncliff Cemetery in the Shrine of Memories, this Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at 11:30am, where friends and family will gather to honor the memory of a remarkable woman who touched so many lives. May Helen Marie Losapio, beloved “Nanny”, rest in eternal peace, forever in our hearts. Flowers may be sent directly to the Shrine of Memories for the Wednesday morning service.
