Gunn Sandberg, age 70, a resident of Yonkers, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2020, after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born in Lovisa, Finland and moved to the United States at the age of 7. She grew up in Westchester County and graduated from the College of New Rochelle and Marymount College with undergraduate and masters degrees in fine arts and education. She was a gifted artist and her paintings were displayed in local galleries. She used her talents to create an after-school arts program for homeless children at Westhab in Greenburgh. She was a special education teacher for many years at Children's Village Residential School in Dobbs Ferry, working with homeless children in crisis. In addition to teaching her class curriculum, she would often teach her students to create crafts, such as pillows and stuffed animals, so that they each had their own comfort items. After retirement, she continued to tutor children in the City of Yonkers. She loved taking daily walks, going to the movies and was an avid reader, participating in a monthly book club. She relished traveling and enjoyed trips throughout Europe, Asia and the United States. She enjoyed exploring New York City, attending Broadway shows and visiting art galleries. Her family and many friends knew her as exceptionally kind, spirited, active and fun-loving. She especially enjoyed doting on her two young grandsons, whom she loved deeply. She is survived by her daughter, Jean Prisco (Robert) of Westchester County, sisters Siv Sandberg (Harlan Sturm) of Belchertown, MA and Anita Sandberg (Scott Richardson) of Upton, MA, and longtime companion, David Cenelli of Yonkers. A memorial service will be held at a future date.
