BURKHARD - Gordon R.
Peacefully passed away on February 27, 2015 in Greenwich, Connecticut at the age of 92. Beloved husband of the late Betty Jean. Loving father of daughter Elizabeth Tolomer and her husband John, and his son Robert Burkhard and his wife Linda. He was greatly loved and cherished by his granddaughters Ashley and her husband Brendan, Sara and Brittany. Gordon was the descendant of Philemon Dickerson, who arrived in Salem, Massachusetts in 1637. He was born on August 14, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Charlotte and Gordon A. Burkhard. He attended Centre College in Danville, Kentucky where he played tennis, basketball and was a member of DKE Fraternity. He served in World War II as a Combat Military Police in the U.S. Army. He was awarded three Bronze Stars for his time served during the war. He began his long publishing career at The Chicago Sun Times. Shortly thereafter, he accepted a position at LOOK Magazine, which transferred him and his family to Chappaqua, New York. He continued his successful publishing career as Vice President/Publisher at CBS - Magazine Division. He enjoyed playing tennis, paddle tennis and golf at Mt. Kisco Country Club. His commitment to his family was his greatest strength. He will be remembered as the most remarkable, generous, kind man who loved life to the fullest and had a wonderful sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the SPCA - Briarcliff Manor, 590 North State Road, Briarcliff Manor, New York 10510.
