Geraldine (Gerry) A. Grant (nee Smith) passed away peacefully on Monday August 31, 2009 at Rosary Hill Home, Hawthorne, N.Y. after a courageous 5 year battle with brain cancer. She was 53. Geraldine was born October 16, 1955 in the Bronx to Eileen and Patrick Smith, who survive. Geraldine also leaves behind her devoted husband Peter, and three loving sons; Andrew, Kyle and Michael all of Valhalla, N.Y. Geraldine graduated from St.Barnabas High School in 1973, and Herbert H. Lehman College in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in Recreation. Geraldine worked as a therapeutic Recreation Specialist at The New York Association For The Blind (The Lighthouse), providing recreational activities for children with multiple disabilities, as an activities leader at St. Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. and as a recreation therapist and director of activities at Frances Schervier Home and Hospital in Bronx, N.Y.
Gerry married Peter on October 23, 1982 at St. Philip Neri Church, Bronx, N.Y. Staying home to raise her sons, she returned to work when they were of school age. She became a special education teacher at Virginia Road Elementary School in the Valhalla School District, a job she truly loved. She earned her elementary education and special education certification after completing her Masters Degree from Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y. She graduated Magna Cum Laude, and was a member of Kappa Delta Phi National Honor Society in Education. Gerry volunteered as a cub scout leader, Valhalla Troop 111, a religious education teacher at Holy Name of Jesus Church, and was very active as a school volunteer and a class parent for all her sons. Gerry loved the beach, drawing, playing games with her family, and her sons memorable birthday parties. Geraldine is also survived by sisters Christine Dolan (Dennis), Claire Pell (Jason), a brother Patrick Smith (Jeanette), 9 neices and nephews, her Aunt Pauline O'Donovan and lifelong friends Kathy Angrisani, Linda McCauley and Gloria Vinelli. Reposing, Hawthorne Funeral Home on Tuesday and Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Gerry's life will be on Thursday 10 AM. at
