On Saturday, November 24, 2018, Gerald "Gerry" Schroeder died from injuries sustained last month from an explosion while working at MetroNorth. He passed peacefully the evening of the 24th of November surrounded by loved ones, his wife of 30 years, Meg formerly of Ridgewood, NJ, and his three daughters, Lisa, Casey, and Madeline. He is also survived by his great aunts, Ann and Mimi; his brothers, Ed, John, Dave, and Danny; his sister, Ruthann; and his grandchildren, David and Nancy. He was predeceased by his father, Edward Schroeder, and his mother, Mary (Byrne) Schroeder who lived in White Plains, as well as his brothers, Jimmy and Bobby Joe.

Gerry joined the White Plains Presbyterian Church in 1997, where he served on the Board of Deacons three times and delighted in teaching church school for many years.

A plumber for 47 years, Gerry enjoyed working with his hands and believed in doing everything the "right way." He worked at Martino Plumbing for 37 years, and at MetroNorth for the last eight years. In addition to these positions he was always happy to help friends, family, and neighbors no matter the time of night. He was a member of Local 21 and Local 31.

Gerry will always be remembered for his compassionate nature, inquisitive mind, and hard work. He was a deep thinker, an avid reader, and a fan of robust conversation and verbal sparring. He was intrigued by history, mathematics, physics, and astronomy. He was a dedicated and loyal family man, and a true friend. When he saw a need, he responded without being asked or expecting anything in return. He was always there to help. All of these values he not only believed in, but embodied in a truly admirable manner. He will be profoundly missed.

Gerry was a lover of, and active participant in, the natural world. Over the span of his life he enjoyed hiking, skiing, kayaking, fishing, and rock climbing. It was his unrealized dream to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that due to his love of the outdoors and unfulfilled plans to thru hike the Appalachian Trail donations can be made to one of the following nonprofits in his memory:
