Frances L. Greenebaum- Scarsdale resident for 65 years passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at home. She was 97 years old.
Frances was born in New York City at the Ansonia Hotel to Martha K and Jesse E Langsdorf. She grew up in Woodmere, Long Island and attended Woodmere Academy. A 1935 graduate of Vassar College, Frances majored in French and spent her junior year abroad at the Sorbonne in Paris, France. In 1937, Frances married Henry Greenebaum. They lived in New York City before moving to Scarsdale in 1947. They were married for 62 years. Henry died in 1999.
Frances was dedicated to helping those with visual handicaps. In the 1950's she started the Braille Group at the Jewish Community Center in White Plains (now Congregation Kol Ami). The group transcribed textbooks for students both in the Scarsdale community and other school systems, making it possible for them to continue their education.
Frances was active with the Girl Scouts of America. She was a troop leader for the Scarsdale Scouts for many years.
Frances loved to cook, read, garden, bird watch, do crossword puzzles and travel. She was a gracious hostess and entertained a great deal including many foreign dignitaries.
She was a member of Congregation Kol Ami since 1948.
She is survived by daughters Barbara Klein and Judith Greenebaum, grandchildren Mark, Elizabeth, Craig, Christine, Peter, Kara Lazarus, Jessica Klein and Elyse and Robert Buchsbaum and great grandchildren Jack, Caroline, Henry, Olivia, Spencer, Jacob, Trevor, William, Seth and Tess.
