On Sunday, September 22, 2019, Dr. Felix Davila passed away at White Plains Hospital.
Dr. Davila was born in Granada, Nicaragua on April 27, 1939. He practiced medicine for fifty years, over forty of which were in the White Plains area. Dr. Davila graduated from the University of Guadalajara, Mexico in 1964. He did residencies at the VA hospital in the Bronx and at Westchester Medical Center. He held fellowships in gastroenterology at the University of Mississippi and at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Davila also studied at the Aiche Cancer Center in Nagoya, Japan.
Dr. Davila was in private practice in Nicaragua from 1973 to 1975 and in White Plains from 1975 until his retirement in 2014. He was attending physician at White Plains Hospital from 1975 until his retirement and was the medical director of White Plains Hospital's addiction treatment center from 1980 until its closing. He was a consulting physician to the White Plains city school district for over 15 years. Dr. Davila held medical licenses in New York, New Jersey, Mississippi and Texas.
Dr. Davila was on the board of directors of many organizations, including the American Red Cross, Westchester Mental Health Association, the English Language Center at Pace University and the American Cancer Society. He was former president of the Westchester Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
In addition to his work as a physician, Dr. Davila was a dedicated poet. He was the founder and chair of the Instituto Cultural Ruben Dario which was dedicated to increasing the visibility and recognition of the Nicaraguan poet within the United States.
Dr. Davila is preceded in death by his mother, father and his daughter, Nicole. He leaves behind family, friends and patients who admired, respected and loved him.
His family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Sociedad Latina, based in Boston, where his daughter, Alexandra, serves as Executive Director. A scholarship for continuing education of Latino youth interested in medical and health sciences is being established in his honor.
