Elizabeth Ann Biers

Elizabeth Ann Biers, 86, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2023 in New Rochelle, NY.
A beloved mother, wife, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend, Elizabeth spent her final two and a half years at Willow Towers assisted living after residing previously in White Plains, NY. Prior to that, she lived in Scarsdale, NY and Greenwich, CT with her husband of more than 50 years, Martin Biers, who passed away in November 2012.
A reflective person who enjoyed walks in nature and the simple pleasure of reading the newspaper over morning coffee, Elizabeth built a home and life with Martin. Together, they raised three sons, Eric, Carl and John, passing on values of kindness and social consciousness usually lightened with a touch of humor.
Elizabeth was born to the late Elsie Jaros and Murry Levine in New York on February 3, 1937, and later adopted by Elsie's second husband, John Jaros. She was educated at New York's Dalton School. She attended Wellesley College for two years before transferring to Barnard College. She also obtained a Masters from Bank Street College of Education and taught for two years in New Jersey public schools.
Elizabeth was a loving and dedicated mother, relishing the ritual of baking three-layer birthday cakes for family members, archiving elementary school-era artwork and news clippings featuring family and imparting onto her kids the richness of travel and intellectual exploration.
Her commitment to her sons was bottomless; whether it was driving the kids to school, sports practice or music lessons, or preparing meals and tending to other homemaking tasks, she always came through. Elizabeth was a strong and active partner to Martin, bantering playfully with him in the good times and supporting him through difficult illness.
Elizabeth loved visits with her grandchildren, reading to them, sharing meals and hearing about their lives. Having raised three rambunctious boys, handling two came easily.
She was a supportive friend quick to offer a sympathetic ear at times of need.
A talented wordsmith, Elizabeth brought care, precision and warmth to her writing. She edited her high school newspaper, worked as a copy editor and contributor for scientific journals and volunteered for editing gigs with college alumni groups and parent teacher association publications.
A voracious reader, she could light up when discussing a novel or well written essay. She read widely, belonged to book groups and took writing and poetry classes later in life.
Elizabeth's favorite operas included "The Magic Flute" by Mozart, and catching holiday choral concerts was a December tradition. She loved the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris, as well as the stained glass at Chartres Cathedral.
A dog lover, Elizabeth readily adapted when sons picked German Shepherds and Beagles as pets, instead of the terrier breeds that she and Martin had chosen. She also tolerated and was amused by the cats that joined the family.
Besides her sons, Elizabeth is survived by Carolyn Biers, Nina Browne, and Derek Elmer, the wives/partners respectively to Eric, Carl and John; grandsons Gabe Biers-Browne and Joey Biers-Browne; and brother Edwin Jaros and his partner, Sheila Green. She will also be missed by cousins and other family members, as well as friends.
