Elaine Loewengart

May 11, 1942 — February 2, 2024

New Rochelle, NY

Elaine Harriet Loewengart (Gutstein) passed away on February 2, 2024, supported by family after a long and brave battle with complications from cancer.

Raised in the Bronx by Jack and Pearl Gutstein, she is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 58 years Steven Loewengart and her three sons and their spouses — Robert (Barbara), Andrew (Jeannie) and Michael (Kate). Her memory carries on by her six grandchildren — Jack, Marc, Oliver, Lance, Julia and George. She is also remembered dearly by a large number of lifelong friends and colleagues, a testament to her ability to create strong connections with all kinds of people.

A graduate of New York University, Elaine was a counselor at PS 21 Bronx for over 25 years working with children, providing parenting advice to families, and coordinating with other educators — all while raising her own three boys.

Having come from a small family, nothing brought Elaine greater joy than having multiple generations of the entire family together around a table celebrating holidays, birthdays, and joyous occasions. She often put her excellent knitting skills to work as the maker of many hats, scarves and blankets. She never went anywhere without carrying a knitting project, and enjoyed taking wooded walks with Steve and friends, caring for her many plants, improvising recipes, hearing about her grandchildren, telling family stories, playing board games (especially Scrabble), and attending services and programs at Congregation Kol Ami where she was a member for over 50 years. In recent days, the senior programs there provided a valued community and often called upon her to lead discussions and activities.

Her strength and presence will be greatly missed by all that knew her. She was the matriarch of the family, always taking the opportunity to share her thoughts, doing all she could to keep everyone connected, and because of that life will not be the same without her. Donations in her honor can be made to Congregation Kol Ami in White Plains, New York. All funds given in her name will support adult programming for years to come.
