Edward J. Rosenthal, age 75, of Croton-on Hudson, an investment banker and philanthropist, died November 28, 2009 at Montefiore Medical Center after a long illness.
Mr. Rosenthal's career in investment management began in 1960 at Ladenburg Thalmann & Company in New York. In 1973, he co-founded Cramer Rosenthal McGlynn, serving as Vice Chairman Emeritus in recent years.
In 1980 he established Goodness Gardens, a nationwide fresh herb and specialty food retailer.
Since 1976 he has been a trustee of Montefiore.
In addition, he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Jewish Guild for the Blind, and was a trustee of the Riverdale Country Day School and Teatown Lake Reservation.
An alumnus of Cornell University and Columbia University School of Business, he is survived by his wife of 51 years, Zita, their three children, Ellen (Maxwell Wiley), James (Kathy Bishop) and Elizabeth Freund (David); five grandchildren Gabrielle, Emma, Alice, Jack and Sam; and sister, Alison Buck, of Paris. He is predeceased by sister, Joan R. Sovern, a sculptor, and by brother, John Kramer, Dean of the Law School at Tulane University.
Ed was truly larger than life. His enthusiasm, bravery and generous spirit affected all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
