Edward John Lamanno

December 28, 1938 — October 6, 2024

Oakland Park, FL

Edward John Lamanno of Oakland Park, FL passed peacefully in the loving embrace of his family and friends on October 6, 2024, after a short illness. He was born on December 28, 1938, in New York, NY, the son of Emanuel and Josephine Lamanno, and was raised in the Bronx, a fact he was very proud of for the rest of his life.

From an early age Ed had a desire to serve others. He embarked on a spiritual career and entered the priesthood, serving at St. Ritas in Long Island City, NY. During this time, Ed was also pursuing a degree in Psychology, ultimately earning a PhD from San Diego University. After fifteen years in the priesthood, Ed decided that he wanted a different life. He left the priesthood, married Diana Puglisi and they had a beautiful daughter, Claudia.

Ed built a private psychiatry practice after the priesthood, which he continued for the rest of his life, serving selected clients in semi-retirement in Florida. Ed assisted hundreds of patients, with a focus on those with addiction problems. Ed was quietly very proud that many of his most troubled patients claim to be alive today because of Ed’s work. Much of his work was done on a Pro Bono basis and he also actively supported several civil rights causes, with a focus on those involving the Gay community.

Ed loved travel, especially when family and friends accompanied him. Some of his very best times were spent visiting historical sites throughout Italy, which he was fortunate to have visited on several occasions. Ed also enjoyed spending time in in his beloved New York City, where he maintained a home all his life. As the family Patriarch, Ed was at his best escorting visiting family around the sites of the “best city in the world”.

Ed also had a passion for the water and enjoyed boating and all things nautical, whether it was at his home on Shinnecock Bay or on the canals of Oakland Park, FL. In recent years, Ed was at his best sitting on his Florida lanai, basking in the tropical breeze and smoking a fine cigar with his beloved dog Gracie at his side.

Ed was predeceased in death by his parents and his ex-wife. Surviving are his sister Joann Weinstein, his daughter Claudia Garcia, granddaughters Alexandra and Victoria Garcia, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
