Edward Joseph Kanze, Jr., 92, of North White Plains died August 16, 2017 after a period of ill health. He was born on August 13, 1925 to Madeline Jacobs and Edward J. Kanze, Sr. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944, he rose to the rank of sergeant and served with the 10th Armored Division in Luxembourg, France, and Germany. He survived the Battle of the Bulge and remained after the war in the occupying forces. In 1951 he graduated from Potsdam State Teachers College (he later earned an M.S.Ed.) and taught at the North White Plains Elementary School and Columbus Avenue School (Valhalla Public Schools). During his teaching career and in his retirement he was active in many local organizations, including the North White Plains Volunteer Fire Department Board of Fire Commissioners, the Boy Scouts, and Castle Heights United Methodist Church.
In 1951 Mr. Kanze married fellow Potsdam graduate Joyce Marie Brownell, who predeceased him. He is survived by their children, Maggie Silton (Andy), Ed Kanze III (Debbie), and Nora Manuele (Paul), by four grandchildren, Kate Silton (Roger Williams), Drew Silton (Kate Weissler), Ned Kanze, and Tasman Kanze, and by two great-granddaughters, Annabel and Emily Williams. He was predeceased by three grandchildren, Diana Silton and Anne and Paul Manuele.
Memorial service is 2:30 pm on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 50 Bedford Rd., Armonk, NY. A reception in the parish hall will follow the service. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the North White Plains Volunteer Fire Company #1 (621 N. Broadway, White Plains, NY 10603) or the Valhalla Ambulance Corps (www.valhallavac.com or P.O. Box 14, Valhalla, NY 10595).
