Edmund (Ed) Zalewski, who was born in Yonkers and lived most of his life there, passed away peacefully Thursday at the Kensington Assisted Living facility in White Plains, NY. He was 86.
Uncle Eddie, as he was known to most, was born on November 10,1931 to the late Josephine Bogus and Alexander Zalewski.
He graduated from St. Casimir Elementary School and Saunders Trade and Technical High School.
After graduation from Saunders, in June, 1950, he worked for a company building television picture tubes. He was then employed by Otis Elevator Company in Yonkers. After being there for only six months, he was called into service for the Korean War in April, 1952.
Mr. Zalewski was an Army baker stationed at the Army Artic Center, Big Delta, Alaska, a test facility for vehicles, which was 100 miles from Fairbanks, Alaska. He also represented his unit as a shortstop on the All-Star softball team playing in Anchorage, Alaska. He served from 1952-54. He was discharged as a corporal and received the National Defense Service Award.
After being discharged from the service, he returned to Otis Elevator in Yonkers. One of his responsibilities was wiring the control panels that were being assembled in the Yonkers plant for the World Trade Center's Twin Towers in lower Manhattan. He retired in December 1982.
He is predeceased by his brothers, Stanley Zalewski and Alexander Zale, and one sister, Frances Zalewski.
He is survived by three nephews, Alan Zale and his wife Joan of Hartsdale, NY, Arthur Zale of Somers, NY and Alexander Zale, his wife Michelle, of Harrington Park, NJ, and his great nephew, Alexander Zale.
The family will receive visitors at Ballard-Durand Funeral Home in White Plains on Tuesday from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Church of St. Casimir, 239 Nepperhan Ave. Yonkers, NY on Wednesday, followed by interment at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Yonkers, NY.
