Edmund Achilles Volpe 86, formerly of Hawthorne, N.Y.

Edmund Achilles Volpe, 86, of Newfield, New York, peacefully passed away on November 29 th , 2020 in his home surrounded by his family.

Ed was born in Mount Vernon, NY on January 15, 1934 to Joseph Volpe and Emily Amoruso.  He was a brilliant, adventurous and athletic young man. Ed loved to play basketball and baseball. He ran a construction company with his son's for several years and was able to draw out floor plans and count astronomical numbers in his head like no one you’d ever seen. He was a skilled electrician. Edmund was fiercely passionate about his work and believed in working hard. His strong work ethic was instilled into all members of the family.

After graduating from Edison Tech, Ed enlisted into the military and is an Army Veteran of the Korean War. Ed later found his job at the telephone company Verizon, which at the time was named New York Telephone. This is where he met his beloved wife, best friend, and soulmate Lorraine Minard. They used to play golf together Sunday mornings and had amazing times together. They got married on September 12, in 1959 and went on to have 4 children. Edmund became a firefighter with the Hawthorne Fire Dept. becoming chief and later serving as commissioner for several years. Ed always put family first. He was a dedicated father. Ed and Lorraine loved to take trips as a family, they would go camping and planned countless unforgettable trips.

Edmund was also a passionate gardener. He spent time outside working on the garden and taking care of his chicken coop when he and Lorraine (wife) moved upstate to Newfield, New York. He loved having the space in the great outdoors to take advantage of what nature had to offer. An ideal day for him would be sitting out overlooking his garden with a good book and his wife alongside him doing the same. He enjoyed cooking and baking. He could whip up some fantastic pancakes for breakfast or a nice loaf of bread.

Ed was predeceased by his beloved daughter Kathleen Volpe (01/12/17) who also had moved upstate to Newfield, where they loved spending time together taking care of many animals and the beautiful land they were able to call home. Ed is survived by his sons Edmund (Terri Sheehy) of Rye, Robert (Suzanne Becht) of North Salem, James (Bobbie Leggio) of Sleepy Hollow. And his ever-loving grandchildren Emilie, Gianna, Jamie, Jake, Taylor, Riley, Aidan and Ronan Volpe. The family Ed has created with Lorraine is one they can look upon and be proud of, the unbreakable bond formed by his love is clear every day. He always made it a point to be in the know for each of his grandkids and was happiest to talk about them. He never missed their sporting events, a concert, graduation, or event of any kind. He was able to spend the most time with them out at Hen Island, NY, where he would love to get the family all together and share some of their best memories. From 4 th of July celebrations, island parties, fixing up camps after storms, Ed was there with a loving hand for it all. He will always be there with us in spirit and in our hearts, his love is undoubtedly strong and stays consistent through his passing.
