Dr. Leo Robert Cardillo, 93, a long-time resident of Hartsdale, NY died at home on Sunday, June 11th. He was surrounded by his children.
Born in New York, NY, Leo was the eldest of Matthew and Carla Cardillo's two children. He graduated Bayside High School and Fordham College, Magna cum Laude before earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from Yale University School of Medicine.
Leo met the love of his life, Joan Cardillo nee Kinard, on a blind date and they married on November 5, 1955. They lived in Queens briefly before moving to Fort Benning, Georgia while Leo was serving in the Army. In 1962, Joan and Leo settled in Hartsdale, NY where he co-founded the Hartsdale Medical Group. He was a beloved doctor, who was dedicated to his patients and profession for more than 60 years.
Leo was a man of many passions. He loved sports cars, dogs, the Brooklyn Dodgers, and his beloved New York football Giants. He took up the trumpet at a young age and played in the marching bands in high school and college. He also played events in a band made up of friends and family. He loved all music but especially the sounds of the big bands from the 40s. He was an avid sportsman. As a boy he enjoyed hunting with his dogs. Later he developed a love for skiing, both water and snow, tennis, golf, and swimming. Leo also loved gardening. If he wasn't in the office or on the tennis court, you'd find him mowing the lawn, pruning, or planting.
Above all, Leo loved his family and spending time with them. While he and Joan occasionally took vacations together, they spent most of their vacation time with their children at a home he bought on Candlewood Lake. When the family grew out of that he would rent large houses somewhere on the water and have the entire crew of children, spouses, and grandchildren around him. There are many wonderful memories of summers in the outer banks of NC, on Lake George, Cape Cod and in the Hamptons.
Leo will be dearly missed by his family and friends especially his sons Matthew and his wife Cathy of PA, Paul and his wife Karen of CT; his daughters: Margaret Fitzsimmons and her husband Thomas of CT, Carla Troast and her husband Douglas of NJ, and Ann Castelli and her husband Joseph of NY; his grandchildren: Kristen Restivo and her husband John, Kathryn Littlefield, Thomas Fitzsimmons, Lee Cardillo and his wife Elizabeth, Matthew Cardillo and his wife Ashley, Andrew Cardillo and his wife Gina, Alex Cardillo, Claire Cardillo, Sarah Riotto and her husband Stephen, Billy Troast, Maggie Troast, Leanne Castelli, Joseph Castelli and Michael Castelli; and his great-grandchildren: Jack, Kayla and Lily Restivo, Allison, Matthew and Isabella Cardillo, Christopher and Cameron Cardillo and Logan Littlefield.
Leo is survived by his brother Robert Cardillo. He was predeceased by his parents Matthew and Carla Cardillo; his wife, Joan Marie Cardillo and his granddaughter Joan Marie Troast.
