Dr. Mary Hawkins McAteer, long time resident of White Plains, N.Y. died Tues. Nov. 30, 2004 at Easton, PA, following a courageous two-year battle with cancer. She was 54 years old.
She was born Jan. 22, 1950 in Flushing, NY.
Dr. Hawkins graduated Queens College, Flushing, NY 1972 receiving a B.S. Cum Laude, Biology Honor Society; 1975 New York Medical College, New York, NY (AOA, Mosby Book Award for Clinical Medicine); 1975-1976 Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY; 1976-1979 Ophthalmology Residency at Brookdale Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Hawkins' professional associations included A.O.A. Honor Society, American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Medical Society, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Christian Medical Society, Westchester County Medical Society (President, Ophthalmology Society, 1995), New York State Ophthalmology Society. She worked on numerous Christian Missionary eye surgery projects in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Honduras and Niger, Africa. She practiced with David Soll MD in Philadelphia, PA; was an Associate of John Finley MD in Greenwich, CT; Associate Attending at New York Eye & Ear Infirmary Resident Teaching; and was in practice from 1982 until 2002. She was certified with the American Board of Ophthalmology, and was published in the Annals of Ophthalmology. Dr. Hawkins was loved by her many patients and esteemed by her colleagues. Drs. Kristin and Michael Pisacano assumed the responsibility of Dr. Hawkins' practice in 2003, and have continued in her tradition of excellence.
She is survived by her beloved husband John Harold McAteer and her two daughters Rebecca Ann, attending New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY, and Jessica Joy, attending Pennsylvania State University in State College, PA. Her parents Donald B. and Margaret Smith Hawkins, sister Margaret Jane Eskow and brother John W. Hawkins DDS, all of Federalsburg, MD, also survive her.
Funeral service will be held Saturday December 4, 2004 at 10:00AM at the Ballard-Durand Funeral Home 2 Maple Avenue at South Broadway White Plains, NY. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday and Friday December 2nd and 3rd, 2004 from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm. Interment will be at Kensico Cemetery Valhalla, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Christian charity of your choice.
