Douglass G. Murphy

September 28, 1930 — February 28, 2011

Hawthorne

Douglass Gerard Murphy was peacefully called home to God on February 28. He was 80 years old. Doug was born on September 28, 1930, to Stephanie and Hugh Murphy of Mt. Vernon, NY. He graduated from A.B. Davis High School and from the New York State Maritime College at Fort Schuyler. Upon graduation, he set sail as an officer on a merchant marine ship, for the first of many cruises that took him all over the globe. These voyages brought him to many exotic locations, and taught him about the customs of foreign lands. Doug's memories of those cruises were some of his fondest stories to share. In 1953, he married Elizabeth (Betty) Macri, the love of his life. They moved to Greenburgh in 1966, where they both resided for the rest of their lives. They celebrated 50 years of marriage shortly before Betty died in 2004. To have more time with his family, Doug changed careers; he left the maritime shipping company and began working in telecommunications in Manhattan. For many years, he commuted to work by train and subway, first, for AT&T, and later for Merrill Lynch. In his later years when he tired of commuting, Doug changed careers again. He became a bus driver for the Southern Westchester Cooperative Board of Education (BOCES), retiring only when carpal tunnel syndrome made it impossible for him to continue driving. Upon retirement, Doug enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Doug is survived by his four loving daughters and their husbands, Karen and Rich Pappalardo, Valerie and John Bonaiuto, Lauren and Ed Rush, and Bobbi and Brian Baker, his sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Sal Tesoro, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Millie and Billy Gray, and his fourteen grandchildren, Matt, Jon, Dana (Chris), Fallon, Ryan, Rachel, Tyler, Jillian, Luke, Nicholas, Caitlin, Francesca, Nolan, and Connor; and many other dear relatives and friends. Reposing Hawthorne Funeral Home, Wednesday, 4-8PM. Funeral Mass Thursday, 10AM, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Elmsford. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School, c/o Sr. Mary Stephen, 59 E Main St., Elmsford, NY 10523.
