Dorothy “Dottie” Katherine Failla (nee Charapata) passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 17, 2024 at the age of 91. She was predeceased by her loving and devoted husband Salvatore “Sal”, of 61 years. Dottie  was born on November 26, 1932 in Beaver, Wisconsin to Joseph and Cecelia Charapata. She was the third from the youngest of 16 siblings.

Dottie graduated from Coleman High School and attended Alverno College where she planned on pursuing a degree in Nursing.  On October 8th,1955 she married her husband, Sal Failla,  and left Wisconsin for New York. Together they had 5 children, Stephanie (David), Geoffrey (Jackie), Pamela (Robert), Michael (Susan), and Janine.

After Dottie raised her children, she continued her studies and completed both her Bachelor and Masters degree in Education at Stony Brook University. She went on to become a beloved  5th grade teacher, teaching for over 25 years in the Sachem School System on Long Island, New York.  One of her favorite areas of teaching was Oceanography, where along with her students, they created paper mache marine animals to hang in the classroom.

Dottie was a very stylish dresser. She was always dressed to the nines, sporting high heels at all times.  She lived a life full of love, laughter, and compassion. Her infectious smile lit up any room she entered, bringing happiness to those who surrounded her.

Dottie was an avid Bridge player, playing several times a week.  She loved to travel and learn about other cultures. She enjoyed dancing with her husband (especially polkas) and was a lifetime learner, taking classes at Stony Brook University once she retired.

In addition to her five children, she is survived by 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

She will be deeply missed by her loving family. Her memory will forever be cherished and will live on in the hearts of all those who were fortunate enough to know her.
