Dorothy (Dot) DiMaggio, 88, formerly of Valhalla, NY, died on October 9, 2021, in Durham, NC. Dorothy was born June 30, 1933, in the Bronx, to Leon and Marie (Mück) Nowicki. She graduated from Evander Childs High School and worked at Columbia Gas in New York after graduation. In 1956, she married Benedetto (Benny) DiMaggio and became a full-time homemaker and mother of two. The family moved to Valhalla in 1964, and Dorothy wasted no time in jumping into community service roles, from Cub Scout den mother and Girl Scout leader to long-time PTA member and Ambulance Corp volunteer and also a longtime member of the Mount Pleasant Seniors. For more than 50 years, she was a member of the Holy Name of Jesus Church Rosary Altar Society. Dorothy was a force of nature who will be remembered for her no-holds-barred approach to life. She loved a good Kohl’s bargain, the bakery department at ShopRite, and her chardonnay with ice. Dorothy is survived by her daughter Susan DiMaggio, brother-in-law Alfred DiMaggio, sisters-in-law Nora DiMaggio and Josephine DiMaggio, a host of nieces and nephews, and her honorary children and grandchildren Kristin and John Calderola and Jillian, John, and Matthew Calderola. She was preceded in death by her husband Benny and son John. Visitation Tuesday, October 19, 3-6 p.m., Hawthorne Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial, Wednesday, October 20, 10:30 a.m., Holy Name of Jesus Church, Valhalla. Internment following at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne. Local COVID protocols will be observed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).
