Doris Bloom

February 26, 1930 — October 27, 2022

Valhalla/Rye

It is with great sadness that the family of Doris Bloom of Valhalla, NY, previously Rye, NY, announces that she passed away on October 27, 2022. She was born in New York City in 1930 and lived in Westchester most of her life.  She is survived by her children, Sheila (Elliott) and their children, Jeffrey (Emily) and David (Sara); Eliot (Elizabeth) and their children, Alison and Michael (Kristy); and Aileen (Paul) and their children, Andrew and Jennifer, as well as her four beloved great- grandchildren. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Perry, a US Army Veteran, in 1998.

Doris graduated from Queens College in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education and was awarded graduate degrees in Elementary Education and Education Administration in 1967 and 1973, respectively. Her teaching positions included kindergarten in New York City and Rye Brook, and kindergarten through 2nd grade at the Hamilton Avenue Elementary School in Greenwich, CT for over 30 years.  She was extremely proud of the positive impact she made on the lives of her students.  Following her retirement, Doris taught English as a Second Language classes at BOCES in Westchester and as a volunteer. She fervently believed that everyone should have the opportunity to be successful and wanted to help those who did not speak English as their native language. In her later years, she audited college classes at SUNY-Purchase and held a leadership position in their organization for senior citizens.  She was committed to the development of senior citizen housing on the campus, which will become a reality in Summer, 2023.

Doris was an avid reader and enjoyed the beach, playing the piano, and traveling. Spending summers in the Berkshires (Becket, MA) with Perry brought special joy to her life.  She was passionate about attending musical performances and ushering during concerts at Tanglewood. She participated in many civic activities in Becket, MA and Rye, NY.  As an only child, Doris gained enormous pleasure as her family expanded.  She felt fortunate to be able to attend her children’s and grandchildren’s graduations and weddings.  She was proud of her position as matriarch of her family.  Doris was an optimistic person, believing in the innate goodness of others.  She was feisty, strong and outspoken.  While her longevity and optimism as well as her love of family and many personal and professional accomplishments are celebrated, she will be deeply missed.

The family offers their gratitude to all of their friends and family who generously gave their support and encouraging words.  A special acknowledgment with thanks is given to Doris' caregiver, Mary Abrokwah, who supported her lovingly during the last few years and her final days and was truly a special friend and companion.  Thanks also to Christine Duff, whose nursing care increased Doris’ comfort during her illness.  The professionalism and extreme kindness of both women allowed Doris to stay in her own apartment to the end of her life.
