Dietrich Neuhold was born in Vienna, Austria, on January 23,1928, and completed his journey in New York on May 12, 2015. His was a life in which travel, joy, and an adventurous spirit were uppermost. As a young man after World War II, he started his career in the travel industry as a booking agent with Cunard Line in Vienna. He then relocated to the Cunard Montreal office in Canada, taking his young family and beloved wife and friend, Erna, with him. After leaving Cunard, he worked at the Italian Lines and later with Marsh Shipping Agency, which was involved, among many other shipping enterprises, in opening up transatlantic shipping between the USSR and Canada. In 1965, he opened his own business, the Dietrich Neuhold Corp., Rhine Cruise Agency, in New York City, focusing on European river cruises. It was an exciting enterprise, which he expanded to include an office in San Francisco. Aside from spending time with his family, Mr. Neuhold enjoyed socializing with friends, and was instrumental in setting up the Austrian Society in Montreal. During his professional years, he was active in ASTA. He fulfilled his dreams and travelled extensively in Central, South and North America, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. He used to say that there were places he wanted to visit before they were on the acknowledged tourist routes. He saw and appreciated the beauty around him. He had wonderful stories of his trips in Tibet, Vietnam, and the islands in South East Asia. His understanding of different peoples and cultures was deep and appreciative. He and his wife, Erna, enjoyed nature and spent many hours hiking to explore beloved places in the mountains and in later years walking through their neighborhood. He is respected and remembered by his friends and colleagues as a person of honesty, integrity, and ability. A kind, charming person who never ceased to be curious about his world, Mr. Neuhold will be missed by his wife of 68 years, Erna Neuhold, his daughter, Beatrice Neuhold-Orth, his son-in-law, John Orth, and his grandson Ian Orth and his wife Emily Larson Orth. His nephew Rainer Vesely and his wife Uli. He is predeceased by his parents, Adolf and Hanna Neuhold, his brother, Ado Neuhold and his sister, Oda Vesely. He will live on in the memory of his family, who cherish him.
