Catherine Kiernan

Catherine Margaret Kiernan, 98, a resident of the Bronx previously of New Rochelle died peacefully on March 10, 2025. Catherine, or Kay to her friends and family, was born in the Bronx on August 26, 1926 to the late John and Margaret Quinn O'Keeffe. She was the second child of four, and her three siblings preceded her in death, John, Marie (Mary), and Theresa. In 1944 she graduated from Cathedral High School in Manhattan, NY. She married Vincent L. Kiernan on August 18, 1951. They were married for almost 50 years before his death on January 28, 2001.

The absolute joy of Kay's life were her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and in-laws. She was always quick to give a compliment and make you feel special. She was the Grande Dame of a large, sprawling Irish clan and nothing made her happier than to be with her extended family. They were the center of her life. When life challenged her, she found a solution. When her hearing failed, she mastered texting and using emojis. She joined Facebook to stay connected with family and friends and was famous for her "like it" comments, fully written out. And when she did not agree with something, her response was a single word, "whatever."

Catherine is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Vincent and Melissa Kiernan of Long Neck DE, her daughter-in-law Frances Kiernan of Croton-on-Hudson, her son Gerard Kiernan of New Rochelle and her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Eamon Deighan of Long Beach NY. Catherine lost her son Edwin last year. She had eight grandchildren, Brian, Michael, Joseph, Kaitlyn, Meghan, Frances, Samantha and Nicole and seven great-grandchildren, Avery, Rhys, Liam, Nolan, Jack, Brooks and Hanna.

Visiting hours will be Monday, March 24, 2025 between 4 - 8 pm at the Ballard-Durand Funeral Home, White Plains NY and a Funeral Mass is scheduled for Tuesday at 10:00 am at St. John the Evangelist Church, White Plains NY. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne NY.
