Bismarck Donato Cuono, age 99, son of Ciro Cuono and Civita Amalfitano, passed away on October 1, 2004. Bismarck was born on the Island of Ponza, Italy on August 31, 1905. At the age of 13 he was apprenticed as a boat builder. In 1927, after being honorably discharged from the Italian navy, he emigrated to the United States. From 1927 until 1939 he worked in a number of capacities, including lumberjack, construction worker and carpenter. In 1939 Bismarck married Angela Maria Ruggiero, and they had three children, Ermelinda, Rosmunda and Ciro. During World War II Bismarck worked for Peterson Electric Boat Company in Nyack, New York, where submarine chasers were being built. Beginning in 1941, he began work for the Minneford Yacht Yard Company in City Island, New York. Bismarck was a master boat builder, and he worked on several Americas Cup champion yachts, including the Constellation and Intrepid. He retired to Athens, New York in 1971 where he grew vegetables, raised rabbits and continued to make furniture in his spare time. Bismarck is survived by his three children, his daughter-in-law Silvia Cuono and three grandchildren, Marco, Vincent and Ciro. Reposing Sunday (today) October 3, 2004 at the Ballard-Durand Funeral Home 2 Maple Avenue at South Broadway in White Plains, New York. Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, October 4th at Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in West Harrison, followed by an entombment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla.
