Beresford Leopold Irving was born to Rebecca Tatham and George Irving on September 4, 1916 in New Market, St. Elizabeth. He relocated to Montego Bay in his early adult years. Beresford had three children before he met his wife Enid. At the time, Beresford was working with his sister, Mary, at the family's clothing store. He met Enid Longshaw who later became his wife. The union produced four children: Donna, Jacqueline, Christopher (Crystal), and Marcia (Gordon), who joined prior three of Cecil (Bertielee), Imogene and Shirley (Kenneth) to complete the family. Their children produced a total of 15 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Beresford leaves to cherish his memory, two sisters, Mary and Josephine, 3 step children, Wayne, Derrick and Debbie, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Shortly after Beresford met Enid, the couple were married in December, 1965. Seeking a better paying job, he secured a job as a Machine Operator in Montego Bay Public Works Department. He would work there until his retirement.
After retirement, he and Enid lived a simple life of loving each other. Unfortunately, Enid would pass on in January, 1989. In September of the same year, Beresford migrated to the United States of America where he went to live with his children in New York.
In New York, he joined Bethel AME Church in Greenwich, CT. He also served as a member of the choir where he sang in the tenor section.
Mr. Irving, who was also affectionately called "Bertie", was a fun loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend to many. He was a man of few words and he was a tower of strength to his friends and family. He always gave his wisdom in parables. One of his favorite parables was "Not every truth is to be known."
