Barry Lazarus

September 17, 1961 — March 26, 2021

Bronx

Barry Lazarus of Bronx, N.Y. passed away on Friday, March 26, 2021 at age 59 from a sudden, fatal cardiac event.  Barry was born in Newark, New Jersey on September 17, 1961 to Ruth and Milton Lazarus.  His family moved to the Bronx in 1962, where he grew up and lived his life.   Barry received his Bachelor's Degree from NYU, majoring in classical guitar.  He went on to receive his Masters Degree in Music from Lehman College, where he also participated in the Lehman Community Chorus for many years.

Barry was a retired music teacher and continued substitute teaching at several Bronx schools, where he became well-known and loved by many in the NYC Board of Education community.  He even taught on the day he unexpectedly passed away.  Barry was a kind, honest, genuine, humble soul, who, without fanfare always helped friends and strangers alike.  Barry was funny, serious, loyal, sensitive, interesting and entertaining.

He cared for the most needy and the most privileged equally, with respect and compassion.  Not only would he make a small donation to a homeless person, he would stop and get to know their story.  When his father and best buddy Milton died, also of a sudden heart attack, Barry was just 11 years old.  After that, he cared for his mother, Ruth, who died just last January 2020.  He was a devoted son, whose mother was also his best friend.  They enjoyed each other.  Barry also has an older sister, Mindy, who survives him, brother-in laws Steve and Gene, a niece, Melanie and his pet rabbit, Oliver.

Barry also had a small business, named BARRY THE CHILDREN'S MAGICIAN, where he gets glowing reviews.  He loved entertaining children and they loved him.  He also worked at Pinebrook Day Camp and Mosholu Montefiore Community Center, spreading his love of music and magic to all.

Barry was a musician at heart.  In his teen years, he played guitar in a rock band, called The Rabbit Band.  He loved popular music from the 70's, jamming with his buddies, and appreciated Classical music.  His best gig though, was the many close friends he made throughout the years who are shocked and saddened by his loss.   If you would like to share your memories of Barry, please leave them on this website.  They will be treasured by his family.

Barry was an animal lover, who made donations to animal charities.  In lieu of flowers, a donation to  any  Animal Rescue Association, in Barry's memory, would be appreciated.  His beloved rabbit Oliver, now adopted by Mindy, thanks you too.

Graveside Funeral Services will be held at Sharon Gardens Cemetery, 273 Lakeview Avenue, Valhalla, New York 10595 at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 30, 2021.  Phone #914-949-0347.  Remember to wear a mask.
