Anna Allen “Tootsie” Volpe, was born May 29, 1929 to Robert Elias and Alma Helena (Whille) Allen in White Plains, NY. Eighth of ten children, Tootsie suffered from childhood health issues, continuing into adulthood. While she lived a vigorous life, the last seven years were fraught with various health concerns eventually culminating in her passing.
A 1947 graduate of White Plains High School, she went on to become a dental assistant. Marrying her high school sweetheart, Serge Joseph Volpe, who predeceased her in 2006, she bore two sons, Serge “Russ” and Mark. While Tootsie wore multiple caps, of great significance was her tireless worker for humanity at her beloved White Plains Corps of the Salvation Army. It was their philosophy of aid and kindness to all peoples that formed her worldview, propelling her to serve as organizer of the church’s soup kitchen for the hungry and homeless for many years, while always reaching out to her many nieces, nephews, and children of family friends on their birthdays and special occasions. She adored them all!
Following in her mother’s footsteps, Tootsie could always be found ringing the Holiday bell for charitable donations in various locations around her beloved White Plains on behalf of the Salvation Army, for which she was honored several times at regional awards dinners. She loved music and for many years played in the church band along with her siblings. Survived by her sons Serge “Russ” (Lynne) Volpe of White Plains, and Mark of Greentown, PA, Mom, Aunt Tootsie, Tootsie, and “Annie” will be missed by the many she touched throughout her long life. In lieu of flowers donations to the White Plains Corp of the Salvation Army are preferred.
