Allen E. Nichols

Allen E. Nichols, 87, a longtime resident of Briarcliff Manor, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family after a brief illness.  Allen was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

He was born December 17, 1931 in Yonkers NY, a son of Foster and Louise Sheets Nichols.  Following graduation from the Choate School in Wallingford, CT. Allen studied Civil Engineering at Cornell University.  He was proud of his Army service in Korea towards the end of that war.  After employment at Bohn Duplicator Corp. in New York City, Allen married Myrtle E. Kolb in Yonkers on March 18, 1961.  They moved to Briarcliff in 1963, where they raised their three sons.

Allen began his banking career with First National Bank in Yonkers, and after several mergers, retired as an officer of National Westminster Bank USA in 1987.  Over the years he was Treasurer of First Presbyterian Church in Yonkers, Briarcliff Congregational Church, and Hudson River Counseling Services.  Following his retirement, he enjoyed volunteer service with the American Red Cross, Westchester Medical Center, Briarcliff Fire Department Ambulance Service, and AARP Tax-Aide.

Allen was predeceased by his eldest son Robert of Ossining, NY. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Myrtle; Rob’s widow Catherine of Ossining, NY and their children Patrick, Andrew, and Mary; son Gregory and wife Noelle of East Northport, NY and their children Kelsey and Alyssa; and son Douglas of Croton-on-Hudson, NY.

Allen is also survived by his sister Louise A. Starzenski, brother Foster, and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by a sister Margaret H. Nevil.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to The Arc of Westchester. Reposing, Hawthorne Funeral Home on Sunday from 11 AM- 1 PM. Funeral Service, Briarcliff Congregational Church, Briarcliff Manor, NY on Sunday at 2:00 PM. Interment private.
