Alice T. Acker

Alice Taylor Acker 90, a former longtime resident of Hawthorne, N.Y. died on July 14, 2010 at Skyview Health Care in Croton, N.Y. She was born on Sept. 17, 1919 to the late Theodore and Alice (Beckley) Taylor in White Plains, NY. A member of the class of 1937 at White Plains High School, she was also a 1939 graduate of Beaver College(presently Arcadia University) in Jenkintown, PA. She went on to become a nurses aide during World War II, and worked for Stauffer Chemical Co. in NYC prior to her marriage. A dedicated homemaker, she was active in many volunteer church and community activities. She was a member of the church Altar Guild, taught Sunday School, and served as a Girl Scout leader. She will especially be remembered for her work as a Midnight Run organizer. A caring wife and mother, she was devoted to her family, and took special pride in her grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Gifford A. Acker, who passed away in 2002. They had been married for fifty six years. She is survived by her three daughters; Barbara Mortenson, and husband Peter, of Bridgton, ME, Cynthia Acker of Ossining, NY and Melissa Murphy, and husband Thomas, of Hawthorne, N.Y. and one son, Gifford Acker, Jr. and wife Ellen, of White Plains, N.Y. She was the loving grandmother of two granddaughters and two grandsons; Sarah Safford, and husband Aaron, and Ryan, Katelyn and Connor Murphy. She is also survived by a sister, Marjorie T. Keeler; and a brother, Ted A. Taylor, and wife Bertha. Reposing, Hawthorne Funeral Home on Sunday 3-7 PM. Funeral service at St. Johns Episcopal Church, Pleasantville, N.Y. on Monday 10 AM. Interment Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, N.Y. In lieu of flowers donations to a favorite charity would be appreciated.
