Borawski, Alfred (Fred) passed away peacefully in his sleep on New Year's Day, Jan. 1, 2015 at the Westchester Medical Center. Fred was born June 19, 1928 to Polish parents Apolinary (Paul) and Francescka (Frances) (Kroll) Borawski and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. Fred attended Pratt Institute, Polytech and New York University achieving his Civil Engineering goals. His tenure at General Foods (Kraft Foods) was over a span of 42 years. Fred met his wife (Mary) Patricia on VJDay 1945 when they were 15 and 17. They were married on Nov. 26, 1949 at the respective ages of 19 and 21. This past November 2014 they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with a huge gathering of family and friends at Broadway Mansions in White Plains, NY. Fred was an outstanding baseball pitcher at Boy's High School and at the age of 17 he was offered a tryout with the Brooklyn Dodgers farm team. Fred choose to finish high school and go on with college. Fred's loyalty to the Dodgers was reapplied to the Mets when the Dodgers left New York. In 1952 Fred was drafted to serve two years in the U.S. Army, one year was spent in combat in Korea with the 101st Signal Corp. He received two bronze medals and achieved the role of Staff Sergeant. When Fred returned home from Korea in Jan. 1954 he and his wife moved to North White Plains and subsequently to Valhalla, NY. In 1954 Fred and Pat were chosen by General Foods Corporation for an interview with a New York radio station on the topic of what it was like for a typical GF couple to move their work destination from the city of New York to the suburbs of Westchester County. Fred is survived by his devoted wife Patricia, his treasured daughter Patricia Borawski Howie, his two much cherished grandsons, Kenneth Daniel Howie, Hoboken, NJ and Paul Thomas Howie, San Diego, CA., his cousin Ted Berak of San Diego, CA and many nieces and nephews from NY, NJ, CA. One of Fred's greatest joys was his relationship with Shannon, his Lhasa Apsos canine who succeeded his pet Dublin, taken by a coyote in 2004. Fred was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Church in Valhalla for the past 60 years. Fred is a past Commander of the Adolph Pfister American Legion Post 1038. The American Legion and its wonderful deeds held a favored spot in Fred's heart. Visitation will be from 11AM-1PM at the Hawthorne Funeral Home, Hawthorne, NY. Followed by a funeral mass at the Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, burial to follow. In lieu of flowers donations can be to the Holy Name of Jesus Church, Valhalla NY.
