Alberto (Nonno) Spagnuolo was born June 11, 1922 in Pietradefusi, Avellino, Italy. He was the son of Angelo Spagnuolo and Angelina De Iesu. Alberto passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully during a nap; at his son’s home in Hawthorne, NY. He traveled on fluffy white clouds to heaven on May 7, 2024. Alberto was only 101 years of age. His entire family is profoundly saddened.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Margherita (Luongo) Spagnuolo in 2003. They were married for 61 years. Their lives together began February 8, 1942. They were loving parents welcoming three surviving children, Angelina Mongiello (Orlando), Rita Beatrice (Luigi), and Angelo Spagnuolo (Lisa). He, his wife, and two children immigrated to America in 1969.
He is survived by his grandchildren and two great-grandsons. They include Anna-Marie Mongiello, Sabatino Beatrice (Robin), Sara Beatrice, Juliana Gonsalves (Mark), Alberto Spagnuolo, Tiffany Spagnuolo, Kristi Spagnuolo. Great-grandsons include brothers Leo Francis and Max Michael Gonsalves.
Alberto was strong willed and stubborn at times, but he also had an enormous heart and wonderfully witty sense of humor. He was a private person, fearless and independent. These traits are what defined him. In his early days he was strong and brave, serving in the Italian Army in 1941-1943. He was also one of their prized boxers. Before retiring, for most of his career, Alberto was a grounds-keeper for Siwanoy County Club in Bronxville. His skills learned from running several family tobacco and grape farms in Italy came in handy when maintaining their golf course.
He had immense passion for the outdoors and achieved great enjoyment gardening. He was always a farmer at heart. However, Alberto found his life’s fulfillment in watching his grand-children grow up. He will truly be missed and will never, ever, be forgotten.
