Mary "Polly" Davies Wolff died on January 26, 2019 at age 95 after a valiant battle with cancer. She was born in Rochester, NY on March 5, 1923 and adopted by the late Stanley and Ramona (Lenington) Davies of White Plains, NY.
Polly, who attended the Penn Hall School in Chambersburg, PA, graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, MO and Wheelock College in Boston, MA. She taught at the Perkins School for the Blind (Watertown, MA), and was later a faculty member of the Spence School in NYC. She once expressed to a granddaughter a desire to explore interior design. Her father was Executive Director of the Community Service Society of New York, a nonsectarian family and health agency. In June 1952, Polly married Herbert A. Wolff, Jr. The couple had met on a bus while commuting to their respective jobs in NYC. Mr. Wolff was with the law firm of Greenbaum, Wolff & Ernst. Polly and Herb were married for over 53 years, until his death in 2005. They raised two children, Dorothy and Charles. Polly was a devoted wife and mother with a strong sense of community service. She started volunteering at White Plains Hospital at 16 as a candy striper, and later worked with the Hypertension Screening Program for more than 30 years. She was also an active member at The Woman's Club of White Plains, their Book Club, the University Club of White Plains, and The Church in the Highlands. She was a gentle, kind soul with a penchant for collie dogs, traveling, cultivating friends and family. Polly is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Maillet (husband, Dan), her son, Charles Wolff (wife, Alicia), and four grandchildren: Christie, Matthew, Jessica and Steven. A memorial service and reception will be held for her this spring at the Church in the Highlands, 35 Bryant Avenue, White Plains, NY.
