We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our loved one, Barbara Joan Baylock (Wright), often referred to as "Bobby" by her family/peers and "Yum" by her grandchildren. Barbara was a beloved sister, mother, grandmother, and aunt, known for her feistiness, unfiltered but loving comebacks, and infectious sense of humor. She departed this life on May 1st, 2023, at the age of 93, leaving behind a legacy of strength, love and laughter that will never be forgotten.
Born in New York City, NY on December 16, 1929, the third child to Edward Harold Wright and Olive Mae Tucker. Barbara grew up in a loving and close family. During her youth, the family relocated to Greenburgh, NY where she attended the Greenburgh public schools and graduated at sixteen years old. She later married Lawrence Baylock Sr and from their union came three beautiful children, Lawrence, Robyn and David.
Barbara was a mom whose tough love helped build strong character in her children and the grit to go out in the world and give it their all. Barbara's fiery spirit and smarts was what always stood out about her and to some she had a personality of an acquired taste. But for those who knew her well understood that beneath her rough exterior was a heart of gold.
Barbara was a woman of many talents and passions and highly intelligent. She was also a dedicated employee and worked for 30 years in civil service for Westchester County, where she made countless friends and touched many lives. In the last five years of her career, at 67, she became a corrections officer. She was known for her unwavering dedication to her job, her ability to connect with and support those in her care, and her fierce independence and tenacity. She retired at 72!
In her spare time, Barbara enjoyed an active and healthy lifestyle, reading books, and volunteering as a swim instructor to the elderly. You may find her off to her next activity with her signature look, ponytail and baseball cap. At the eve of her life, she was not physically active and enjoyed watching her "tv boyfriend", Steve Harvey on Family Feud, crossword puzzles and reading her Bible. Being raised in a Methodist church, she always stayed connected to the Lord. She became a member of the First Baptist Church and looked forward to Sunday services. If she thought there was a chance someone forgot to bring her, she, and her rolling-walker ("the bust stop") would attempt to head down the street before service started. Her will was incredible and admirable. There is so much one can say about Barbara. What is definite is she will be truly missed and loved forever. We will hold on dearly to the memories we have of her.
Barbara is predeceased by her parents, Edward and Olive Wright, husband Lawrence Baylock Sr, children: David Baylock and Robyn Patience, siblings: Edward Wright, Olive Force, Charles Wright, Myrtle Willis and Lauren Leake. She is survived by her sister, Beatrice Miller, eldest son, Lawrence Baylock Jr(Sharon). Grandchildren: Michelle Baylock, Shawn Cleveland(Vaughn), David Baylock(Claudia), Lawrence Baylock III(Trisha), Kyle Baylock, Lisa Patience, Jerome Baylock, Shayla Jones(Justin), and Darrin Baylock, and great-grandchildren: Christopher Orridge(Jodi), Asia & Brielle Orridge, DeVaughn Cleveland Jr, Chauncey Cleveland, Lawrence Baylock IV, Lorenzo & Sebastien Baylock, Summer and Miles Baylock, Chaeyung Campbell & Taichen Graham, Cali & Camden Jones, Kaliko Wade, several nieces and nephews, as well as her forever friend, Ms. Martha James.
The Baylock and Wright families will like to thank all of you for your words of comfort and support during out time of grieving.
We greatly appreciate it!
