Alexander Smallens Jr., a retired broadcasting executive, died peacefully surrounded by family and loved ones on Monday, September 28 at his home in White Plains, NY. Mr. Smallens battled Multiple Sclerosis for over forty years, but succumbed to Multiple Myeloma after a three year illness. He was 74. Mr. Smallens grew up in Stamford, CT, and attended Eaglebrook School, Phillips Exeter Academy and Yale University. He was a broadcasting executive with both CBS and ABC Radio, and was a pioneer in the development of music programming on the FM dial; he was instrumental in the creation of the first FM network. He lived in Scarsdale, NY for most of his adult life prior to moving to White Plains. Music was a common thread in his family tree; his father, Alexander Smallens, was the noted conductor and his mother, Ruth White Smallens was a composer and violinist. Mr. Smallens is survived by his wife, Timmi Smallens; a daughter, Meredith Smallens Lonner (Chris Lonner) of Scarsdale, NY and a son, Sandy Smallens (Leyla Turkkan-Smallens) of Yonkers, NY; and five grandchildren.
